The following afternoon, the Homerun Derby was held. All the kids eagerly waited for the contest to start. Mr. Erikson set up the pitching machine to throw a variety of balls. Going first, he hit the first pitch, a curve ball to the 400 foot marker. He his a second one 410 feet. Getting better with each pitch, the third ball he hit 430 feet, beating his old record by 20 feet. It was Mary's turn. No one thought she could do it. The Supervisor and Head director of camp said the rules will be bent for Mary if she wins. He really didn't think Mary had a chance. He lazily folder his arm over each other and stifled a yawn. Mary hit the first ball 300 feet.

Mr. Erickson taunted, “Better luck next time. Come on, let's just go play ball.”
Mary argued, “No, I have 2 more hits left.” Mary took aim and hit the second ball 460 feet. The Camp Head almost choked he was so shocked.
“Come on Mary, you can do it!” The campers cheered.
Mary took aim, swung and crack. The ball went sailing. Mr. Erikson made a premature comment, “Well, that one couldn’t have gone 460 feet so I guess you are stuck playing softball.”
Ms. Davis walked over to the ball with the ruler in hand. “But it can’t be. Will someone check to see the other end is in the ground where it belongs, please?”
Eddie ran over to check. Mr. Erikson trumped him and said that he will do it. Eddie, however, did not quite trust Mr. Erikson. “My God! It is right where it belongs. What measurement do you get down there? It can’t be better than mine!”
“It is. 460 feet.”
Mr. Erikson grabbed a bat and had the machine toss him another pitch. Crack, 430 feet. Crack 420 feet. Crack 433 feet. Crack 435 feet. He stopped and looked sternly at Mary. “There is no way in hell you could have cracked that ball 460 feet!”
Mary grabbed a bat and went up to plate. “Want to see my do it again? And again?” Crack 475 feet. Crack 462 feet. Crack 480 feet. “I will see you at the baseball diamonds. I do highly recommend that you and I be on separate teams. Otherwise, the other team will still have an unfair advantage against me.”
Mr. Erikson looked on stunned. The Camp Head just stared at Mary for a whole minute before he finally found his voice. “I - I - I think that perhaps, uh, we should have Mary play softball anyhow. You know, insurance might not like it.”
“If Mary has to play softball with the girls, then all of us will call our parents and ask them to take us home immediately!” Priscilla argued for them all. Everybody quickly agreed. None of the girls wanted to play against Mary. Meanwhile, all the boys wanted Mary on their team.
David spoke up, “Actually, according to the law of physics, you will have a much better chance of having legal issues if Mary were to hit a softball with her bat. No girl could stand a chance of catching it with their bare hands. The ball would break the hand if anyone tried.”
Neither Mr. Erikson nor the Camp Head could argue with this. Trying to catch one of Mary‘s softball, would surely break at least one hand of another female player. Mary was allowed to play baseball with the boys. It was also decided to have a homerun derby contest to decide who was on which team just so that the two teams could be as even as possible. Mr. Erikson did play, opposite Mary for no one could hit a ball remotely as far as they could.
